The new NIKKOR 16-80 f/2.8-4 is sculpted from polycarbonate. Its older sibling, the NIKKOR 17-55 f/2.8, is a metal monster of a lens. The new lens’s satin texture makes the plastic body feel solid and keeps it from screaming, “Plastic!”. Rub your hands over it, however, and it definitely does not feel like painted metal.

All reviews of the Nikon 24-70 refer to AF speed and reliability as being impeccable. Just ordered a Refurb 24-70 2.8 N (non VR) from Nikon USA. They have 10% off now and was able to get at equivalent to roughly 'Excellent' condition used price of most used retailers. USD1,350 for a Refurb 24-70 2.8 is pretty good I think.
Let’s see how both compare wide open (Left: 28-300mm, Right: 18-200mm): The 18-200mm is clearly superior at 28mm f/4.0 than 28-300mm at f/3.5 in the center. Stopping down 28-300mm to f/4.0 improves sharpness and by f/5.6 both lenses perform equally well, with a slightly better performance by the 28-300:

Nikon D750, 100% crop, 70 mm@f2.8, left Nikkor 24-70G, right Tamron 24-70 G2. G version of Nikon lens slightly outperforms new VR version in central sharpness (except of 24mm in this comparison). The difference is most pronounced at 70mm. Where VR version shines above all 20-70s is edge of frame.

That said, I don't think either Nikon or most consumers will care that the filter set matches anymore, especially between a 16-35 and a 24-70 f/2.8. Yes - but matching will be good between 16-35 with 70-200 or 24-70 with 70-200. Currently the 16-35 f/4 is matched up with 70-200 f/2.8 @ 77mm filter size. The 24-70 VR and the 70-200 does not match.
