Tryand launch assetto corsa from the default launcher and go to options > controls and start and complete the configuration wizard. Yea it's not exactly as I described it. Actually I had to click the entry I was about to change, then click "cancel", which clears the current assignment, then clicked the entry again and selection of the desired wheel button was working.(Had to redo all my controller setup yesterday evening after accidentally overriding it with default settings
